Changes in the Mares Prior to Foaling

Last year we had many emails from 'first time mums-to-be' asking about signs of imminent foaling so I thought people might be interested to see some of the physical changes in our own mares prior to foaling - as they say, a picture speaks a thousand words... and some of the changes are very obvious...! So if bagging up is an alien term to you and puffy vulval lips sounds like someting from an x-rated video then have a look at these pictures...

Obviously every mare is different and we have been caught out a couple of times when mares have started foaling - despite not looking 'ready' but these pics mighth elp give you an idea!

bambi 12 hours before foaling
bambi 12 hours before foaling
bAMBI 12 HOURS BEFORE FOALING
Bambi bagged up - 12 hours before foaling
Bambi - you can see her vulval lips have become 'fleshy' and are opening slightly - 12 hours prior to foaling
Again, 12 hours before foaling, you can see a droplet of milk on her teat...and if you look closely there is dried milk onher inner thigh. You can see how full her udder is
Phantom 2 days before foaling
pHANTOM 2 DAYS BEFORE FOALING
Phantom 2 days before foaling
Phantom - 2 days before foaling - almost completely full bag...Compare it to the picture below though
Phantom - 2 days before foaling - you can see her vulval lips are starting to open slightly
2 days before foaling - pretty full but still not completely taut and hard accross her udders
Phantom 12 hours before foaling
pHANTOM 12 HOURS BEFORE FOALING
Meg 2 days before foaling
Compared to the pic above you can see how much fuller her udder is from behind - this was 12 hours before she foaled
Phantom again - 48 hours later from the pic above and to the right, and you can see a big difference - the teats are full, taut and pointing outwards. She has drips of milk on both teats and she had dried milk down her legs - hard to spot on a cremello but you could feel it!
Meg 2 days before foaling... you can see a golden 'waxing' on her teat.. not yet the white colour that tends to come as they get closer. The swelling infront of the teats is oedema - nothing to worry about
Kya 12 days before foaling
Kya 12 days before foaling
Kya - 12 days before foaling - not yet fully bagged up
No signs of 'wax' (dried milk) on her teats and you can see her udder is a long way off the fullness and tightness of Bambi's above - 12 days before foaling
Lola 18 days before foaling
Kya 10 days before foaling
Lola - 18 days before foaling... still a lot of filling to do...there's still room for a fold between the 2 udders - that tends to disappear closer to foaling as the udder fills properly
Just 2 days later you can see that Kya has bagged up some more - but yet she still has a long way to go...she foaled 10 days after this picture was taken
ECLIPSE 19 DAYS BEFORE FOALING
Eclipse 19 days before foaling
Compare Eclipse to Bambi above... This was taken 19 days before Eclipse foaled...you can see how much fuller her bag still has to get before it reaches Bambi's tightness
You can see Eclipse's vulval lips do not have the same fleshy, puffy look to them - this was 19 days before she foaled
