CIDER MAKING AT ROLLESTONE!
Here are some photos from the making of the second batch of Rollestone Cider. The first barrels made in 2004 which were mostly consumed at the big 2005 Arden BBQ were very popular. Approximately 70 gallons have been made so the next BBQ should be a goodun...!
Here you can see the whole process from start to finish...

First we needed some apples - luckily the Rollestone Orchard has ample supply so a few days were spent apple picking by all the family... |
And here are the apples collected by all the family...And the equipment used to make the cider. here's the mulcher that crushed all the apples into pulp ready for the press |
Next the apples are fed into the mulcher which in the olden days would have been turned by hand - in 2006 however we have adapted the sit on mower's motor to turn the wheel - much less like hard work! You can see the apple mulch coming out of the shoot on the left of the wheel... |

Above is the Press - Empty and then full of apple mulch |
Next a ratchet system powered by a lever which needs to be pushed back and forth lowers the press onto the apples, this pressure causes the juice to squeeze out |
Once all the juice has been pressed from the apples the ratchet system is raised and the lid removed. The sides are peeled away to reveal a 'cake' of apple mulch. The horses LOVE this! You can see the straw mixed in - this is added to the press to filter the juice. |

And finally....sampling the pure Rollestone Apple Juice... |
